Amethyst Heart - 1 inch

Amethyst Heart is a small puffed piece, domed on both faces rather than flat, in colour that runs from deep grape purple through to near-black in the most saturated stones. Paler lilac and whitish quartz zoning shows through parts of most pieces, following the original crystal banding. The lobes are carved to a soft symmetry with a rounded point, polished smooth all over, and at this scale the Heart sits easily in a closed hand or tucks into a pocket.

Amethyst is traditionally associated with intuition, spiritual awareness, and settling a busy mind, and is among the most widely used stones in contemporary practice. Geological Information
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, silicon dioxide in the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its colour comes from iron impurities within the silica lattice altered by natural gamma irradiation from the surrounding rock, and because that irradiation reaches the crystal unevenly the colour concentrates into zones and growth bands rather than distributing uniformly. The material forms in cavities within volcanic rock, most notably in the large basalt geodes of southern Brazil and Uruguay, where crystals line the interior through long periods of slow mineral deposition. Heat treatment above roughly 470 degrees Celsius shifts the colour to yellow or orange, and material treated this way is sold commercially as citrine or prasiolite; some pale amethyst is irradiated to deepen its colour, and this is disclosed where known.
