Astrophyllite is a rare titanium inosilicate that forms radiating, blade-like crystals, with a low Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5. Its golden to bronze metallic blades fan out in a star-burst pattern against a dark felsic matrix, a colour arrangement that gives the stone its name, from the Greek astron, meaning star, and phyllon, meaning leaf. It forms in pegmatites and nepheline syenites and was first described in 1844. It occurs naturally with no treatment applied. Sources include Norway, Russia, and Greenland.
