Its glowing blue-white adularescence is caused by light scattering between thin alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar that form as the mineral cools, and the finest blue sheen in transparent material comes from Sri Lanka. The phenomenon is named adularescence after Adularia, a Moonstone locality in the Swiss Alps. The stone carried a lunar association in ancient Rome and Greece, where it was believed to form from solidified moonbeams, and it featured prominently in Art Nouveau jewellery through designers such as Lalique.
