Volcano Agate Heart carved to a broad, symmetrical form with full lobes and a rounded point. The stone is dark overall, deep green through to black, with paler grey-green and cream mottling gathering in patches across the faces rather than running in even bands. The polish is high and the surface reads glassy, and at the upper end of this size range the piece is a two-handed object rather than a pocket stone.

Geological Information
Volcano Agate is a trade name rather than a formally recognised geological species, applied to agate or chalcedony showing fiery banding, plume-like inclusions or dramatic host-rock texture. The underlying material is a chalcedony variety within the quartz family, silicon dioxide in the trigonal system at Mohs 6.5 to 7. Colour in material sold under this name is typically vivid and saturated, commonly fiery red, orange and black, and that saturation is usually achieved through dye enhancement rather than occurring naturally at that intensity; some material is UV-reactive as a result of the dye process. The dye status of this piece has not been confirmed. It should not be confused with true Fire Agate, which shows genuine iridescent botryoidal layering rather than volcanic-looking colour and pattern. The name is modern, popularised in the crystal market and tied to the volcanic-region sources the material comes from. Commercial material is reported from Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey and the USA, particularly Oregon and Utah.
