Bloodstone, also called Heliotrope, is a chalcedony variety from the quartz family, silicon dioxide, with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system. Its dark green base comes from chlorite, while the characteristic red spots come from iron oxide and resemble drops of blood against the green, which gives the stone its name. It was used across ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and medieval Christian tradition associated the red spots with the blood of Christ, producing carved religious bloodstone objects that remain historically significant.
