Geological Information
Crazy Lace Agate is a chalcedony variety of the Quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system. Its multicolour banding in reds, yellows, creams, and greys comes from iron oxide and mineral variation. It is characterised by wild, irregular looping and swirling patterns produced by complex fluid movement during silica deposition, and is sometimes sold as Mexican Agate or Happy Lace Agate. It is a natural material with no treatment. There is little pre-colonial record for it; it is largely a 20th century commercial discovery. Origins: sourced almost exclusively from Chihuahua state in Mexico.
