Geological Information
Lapis Lazuli is a rock composed mainly of lazurite, calcite, and pyrite, with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6; its deep blue comes from lazurite, the white veining from calcite, and the gold flecks from pyrite. The Afghan Sar-e-Sang deposit has been mined for over 6000 years, one of the longest continuously worked mining sites in history, and ground lapis produced ultramarine, the most valuable blue pigment in medieval and Renaissance art. Significant imitation exists, with dyed jasper, dyed howlite, sodalite, and glass all sold as lapis, and lower-grade material is often wax or polymer impregnated. This is natural material. Origins: Afghanistan, chiefly Sar-e-Sang in Badakhshan, with additional sources in Chile and Russia.
