The Sardonyx Heart is a strongly banded stone, with dark layers meeting warm orange-brown zones along sharp, roughly parallel boundaries that run across the lobes at whatever angle the cutter took them. The polish is glassy and the contrast between the bands is high, so each piece reads almost graphically rather than as a blended pattern. The Heart is a comfortable hand size, rounded in profile and dense in the palm. 

Sardonyx is traditionally associated with confidence and ambition, one of the more assertive readings in the chalcedony family and consistent with its long history as a stone of seals and signets. A secondary association with protection and grounding rounds that out, and Sardonyx is commonly described as a stone for holding a position rather than pushing forward from it.

Geological Information
Sardonyx is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide mineral of the trigonal system at Mohs 7. Its structure is a layered combination of two chalcedonies: sard, which supplies the red-brown to orange bands through iron content, and onyx, which supplies the contrasting pale or dark layers. That natural layering is the reason Sardonyx became the foundation of the Roman cameo tradition, since a carver can cut down through one coloured layer to reveal another beneath, and it remains one of the most refined uses of natural mineral banding in the history of carving. It is among the oldest continuously used gemstones, serving as seal stone across Greek, Roman, and Renaissance European cultures, and it appears among the twelve stones of the Hebrew High Priest's breastplate. A significant proportion of commercial sardonyx on the market is assembled or dyed agate rather than naturally banded material, and the status of this particular stock is being confirmed with the supplier.
