Geological Information
This is a natural volcanic glass, silicon dioxide, with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5 and an amorphous structure. The black body carries spherical clusters of white cristobalite, a high-temperature polymorph of silica, that form as the obsidian slowly begins to devitrify, or partially crystallise; in this material the clusters spread into the radiating firework or flower-like patterns that give the stone its trade name, the same family of inclusions seen in snowflake obsidian. The devitrification process represents the glass beginning its transformation back toward crystalline material. This tower form is also sold as an Obelisk or a Point, all describing the same faceted, single-terminated cut. Principal sources include the United States and Mexico.
