Thousand Layers is a Chinese trade name for a finely banded sedimentary stone, typically a tightly banded limestone or chalcedony (Mohs 3-7, varying by composition), in which the layers are so fine and numerous that a cross-section shows an extraordinary density of thin bands. The multi-toned banding in cream, brown, grey, and tan reflects extremely slow, cyclical mineral deposition over geological time, and the exact mineral composition varies between lots. It is untreated natural material with no ancient tradition under this name, though China has extensive traditions of working decorative banded stones. It is sourced primarily from China.
