Banded Agate is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, microcrystalline silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its banding forms as silica-rich fluids fill cavities in host rock and deposit in successive layers, with each band recording a separate deposition event. It is the foundational agate form and one of the most widely distributed minerals on Earth. Agate was named by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus after the Achates River in Sicily and was used extensively in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome for seals, amulets and inlay.
