The Amethyst Cathedral is a tall geode section cut open along one face to reveal the crystal-lined cavity within. The Amethyst points crowd the interior in dense ranks, holding a mid violet through the body of the face and lightening toward the agate rim, where a thick grey and white band separates the crystal from the dark host rock at the outer edge. The proportions run vertical rather than wide, so the piece draws the eye upward and needs depth rather than width on a shelf. The base is cut flat and the geode stands without support.

The Greeks named it amethystos, meaning not drunk, and both Greek and Roman wearers carried it as a guard against intoxication. Geological Information
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7, its colour produced by iron impurities together with natural irradiation within the lattice. Cathedral geodes form where prismatic hexagonal crystals grow inward from the walls of a gas cavity in volcanic rock, the agate shell sealing the void first and the Amethyst filling it slowly afterward; cutting the cavity open is what produces the standing face. Colour intensity varies with iron content and exposure, running from palest lilac to deep royal purple, and often deepens toward the interior of a cavity. Heating above approximately 470 degrees Celsius turns Amethyst yellow or orange, and that material reaches the market as citrine or prasiolite; pale material is sometimes irradiated to deepen it. Brazil is the principal commercial source, with material also worked from Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, South Korea, and Canada.
