Amethyst Geode Cathedral - 7.7 x 8.1 inch

The Amethyst Cathedral is a standing geode section opened to expose a full interior wall of purple Amethyst crystal. The points run in tight parallel ranks across the cavity, deepening from pale lilac at the outer edge to a saturated violet toward the centre, and a broad band of grey and white agate frames the crystal face where the host rock gives way. The cut base is level enough for the piece to stand unaided. This is the wider of the two sizes in the range, presenting a broad, shallow face rather than a tall narrow one.

Geological Information
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral of the trigonal system at Mohs 7. Its colour comes from iron impurities combined with natural irradiation within the crystal lattice, and ranges from palest lilac to deep royal purple depending on iron content and exposure. Cathedral pieces of this kind form when prismatic hexagonal crystals line the inside of a gas cavity in volcanic rock over millions of years; the surrounding grey and white banding is the agate shell that formed first and sealed the void. Heat treatment above approximately 470 degrees Celsius shifts Amethyst to yellow or orange, and material treated this way is sold commercially as citrine or prasiolite; some pale Amethyst is also irradiated to deepen colour. Zambian material is noted for exceptional clarity and a distinctive blue-violet secondary hue, though Brazil remains the dominant commercial source, alongside Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, South Korea, and Canada.
