Amethyst is the purple variety of the Quartz family, a tectosilicate (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7, trigonal crystal system). Its purple to violet colour arises from iron impurities combined with natural irradiation within the crystal lattice, ranging from the palest lilac through to deep royal purple. The name derives from the Ancient Greek amethystos, meaning not drunk, worn across Greek and Roman cultures as a talisman against intoxication and later prized extensively in royal and ecclesiastical jewellery throughout European history, purple being the colour of royalty and spiritual authority. It forms as prismatic hexagonal crystals lining geodes, vugs, and alluvial deposits. Principal sources include Brazil and Uruguay, along with Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, South Korea, and Canada.
