Amethyst Worry Stone cut to a large oval with a broad thumb hollow. The purple runs unevenly through the stone, deeper at one end and paling toward the other, with cloudy white quartz zones breaking through the colour in most pieces rather than the uniform violet of gem-grade material. The polish is high and the surface cool, and the piece is wide enough that a thumb crosses the hollow without reaching either edge.

Geological Information
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7. Its colour comes from iron impurities combined with natural irradiation acting on the crystal lattice, and it ranges from the palest lilac to a deep royal purple, often varying within a single crystal. It forms as prismatic hexagonal crystals lining geodes, vugs and alluvial deposits, with Zambian material noted for exceptional clarity and a distinctive blue-violet secondary hue. Heat treatment above roughly 470 degrees Celsius shifts the colour to yellow or orange, and this is the standard industrial route to most material sold as citrine or prasiolite; some pale amethyst is also irradiated to deepen its colour, and where either is known it is disclosed. The name comes from the Ancient Greek amethystos, meaning not drunk, and the stone was worn across Greek and Roman cultures as a talisman against intoxication before passing into centuries of European royal and ecclesiastical use, purple being the colour of both authority and the church. Commercial material is sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, South Korea and Canada.
