The Orthoceras Fossil Plate is cut and polished from Moroccan black limestone, a flat, rounded plate whose dark surface is scattered with the pale cross-sections and profiles of genuine fossilized sea creatures. Every plate is a one-of-a-kind slice of ancient seabed: the fossils sit exactly where they settled hundreds of millions of years ago, and the polish brings their white and grey forms into sharp relief against the near-black matrix.

Geological Information
Orthoceras are fossilized cephalopod molluscs, ancient relatives of the modern nautilus, squid, and octopus, that lived approximately 400 to 500 million years ago during the Ordovician and Silurian periods; the name means straight horn, referring to the long, straight shell. The black colour of the surrounding matrix comes from bituminous material in the rock, and the fossils are natural remains polished in their original limestone. Plates from this material are also widely marketed as Ammonite plates in the trade. The Moroccan Atlas Mountains hold exceptionally rich deposits of this fossil-bearing black limestone, and Morocco is the primary commercial source.
