Angelite is the blue variety of anhydrite, a calcium sulphate mineral with the chemical formula CaSO4. It forms when gypsum loses its water content under suitable geological conditions, producing a relatively soft mineral with a Mohs hardness of approximately 3.5. Its characteristic pale-to-medium blue colour can vary in intensity and may be accompanied by white mottling, cloudy areas, or other natural mineral features. Peru is one of the best-known commercial sources of blue Angelite material.
