Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral, orthorhombic and soft at Mohs 3.5-4, and one of the two common calcium carbonate polymorphs alongside calcite: identical chemistry, different crystal structure. Its colours run through white, yellow, brown, orange, and blue depending on trace mineral impurities. Aragonite is the mineral component of nacre and coral, meaning the same compound that forms this stone also builds mollusc shells and reef structures, and the star cluster or sputnik habit it sometimes takes is a natural growth form rather than any kind of assembly. The material is natural and requires no treatment. It was named after the Aragon region of Spain, where it was first described in 1797.
