Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral with a hardness of 3.5 to 4 and an orthorhombic structure, one of the two common calcium carbonate polymorphs alongside calcite, sharing its chemistry but crystallising in a different structure. Its warm colours of white, yellow, brown, and orange come from trace mineral impurities, and it is also the carbonate that forms the nacre of shell and coral. First described in 1797 in the Aragon region of Spain, from which it takes its name, it is found today in Spain, Morocco, Mexico, the United States, and the Czech Republic.
