The Azurite Malachite Heart carries deep blue and green zones meeting across the surface in irregular patches, with grey and brown matrix showing through where the host rock remains. The blue reads dark and dense, the green brighter against it, and the proportion between them shifts completely from piece to piece. The polish is smooth with a soft rather than glassy lustre. Some Hearts are predominantly green with blue flecking and others reverse it entirely.

Azurite Malachite is a naturally occurring combination of two copper carbonate hydroxide minerals, azurite in blue and malachite in green, monoclinic in system at a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4. Both share the same copper-carbonate chemistry, and the colour difference is determined by the precise ratio of water held in the crystal structure. Azurite gradually converts to malachite over geological time, which is why the two are so commonly found together in the oxidised zones of copper ore deposits, and it is also why prolonged light exposure causes a slow colour shift in azurite-rich material. Both minerals have been used since antiquity as pigments: azurite was a primary blue in medieval and Renaissance European painting, and malachite has featured in Egyptian and Russian decorative traditions for thousands of years. Morocco and Arizona are the primary commercial sources, with further material from the Congo, Russia, and Australia.
