The Blue Apatite Heart is a deep teal to petrol blue stone, opaque and richly saturated, with darker near-black zones and paler streaking marbling through the body. The colour is unusually intense for a blue stone and holds its depth under most lighting rather than washing out. The polish is high and glassy, and the Heart sits comfortably in a closed hand. Geological Information
Blue Apatite is calcium phosphate, hexagonal in system, with a Mohs hardness of 5. The vivid blue to blue-green comes from rare earth element impurities and is among the more intense natural blues available in the crystal market. Apatite is one of the few minerals that gives its name to an entire mineral group, and its name derives from the Greek apate, meaning deceit, a reference to how frequently it has been mistaken for other minerals. It is also the primary mineral component of tooth enamel and bone, which makes it one of the few stones with a direct structural counterpart in the human body. Heat treatment is commonly used to enhance or stabilise the colour, and disclosure applies where known. At Mohs 5 the material is soft enough that surface scratching is possible with wear.
