Black Agate is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, a microcrystalline silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal structure. Almost all commercial black agate is natural grey or banded chalcedony dyed deep black using a sugar-acid or iron nitrate process standardised in the German Idar-Oberstein agate trade since the 19th century; the treatment is absorbed into the porous stone and the colour is stable and permanent. Black agate has been used in mourning jewellery and protective contexts across European and Middle Eastern traditions. Primary sources are Brazil, with additional material from India and Germany.
