Blue Agate Slab - 5.4 x 7.7 inch

Dense navy stacked deep around a cream-white core
$68.95

Product Description

Broad and dome-shaped, this Blue Agate Slab carries dense navy banding around the outer edge that lightens through steely blue toward a cream-white crystalline centre. The layers are numerous and closely stacked, giving the outer portion real visual weight before the interior opens up. A faint warm tint runs through the centre where the crystal meets the final band. The cut face is smooth and glossy, the back left unfinished, and the wide flat base gives the piece a low settled stance.

Banded Agate is traditionally associated with balance and harmony, and with a grounding, protective quality. A wide dome sits naturally on a horizontal surface and is generally placed where it can be seen from more than one angle, on a coffee table, chest, or sideboard. Agate has long been kept in rooms a household uses together, and this format suits a setting where a tall upright specimen would feel out of scale with the furniture around it.

Geological Information
Banded Agate is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, formed by repeated silica deposition within a cavity in host rock. The heavy concentration of dark banding at the outer edge records an early phase in which entering fluids carried a substantial load of iron and other trace minerals, staining those first layers deeply before the supply ran cleaner and later deposition produced the paler interior tones. Reading a cut face outward to inward therefore gives a chronological account of how the mineral content of the system changed over the period the cavity was filling. Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony within the quartz family, formed through successive layers of silica deposited within a cavity over time. It is common industry practice for coloured agate to be dyed or otherwise colour-enhanced to achieve vivid, saturated tones. Agate is among the oldest documented gemstones in continuous human use and one of the most globally distributed minerals, recovered from Brazil, India, the USA, Mexico and Germany. This piece originates in Brazil.
