Geological Information
Banded Agate is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7 in the trigonal system, formed by cyclic silica deposition within a cavity in host rock. The clear division on this piece between a narrow banded zone and a large crystalline interior marks the point at which fluid chemistry changed from favouring dense layered accretion to favouring free crystal growth; that transition happens at different stages in different geodes, and its timing determines how much of a finished specimen reads as banding and how much as crystal. Here it occurred early, leaving the banded portion comparatively thin.
