Blue Agate Slab - 3.7 x 4.4 inch

A broad black rim encircles this Blue Agate Slab, its banding stepping inward in fine pale blue and white rings toward a small bright white pocket set slightly above centre. The rings are numerous and closely spaced, and against the near-solid black of the outer edge they read almost like a target. The piece is compact and light in the hand, with a high polish across the cut face and an unfinished mottled back. The base is cut flat and it stands without support.

Geological Information
 Banded Agate is silicon dioxide in its microcrystalline chalcedony form, Mohs 7, deposited in cyclic layers within a cavity in host rock. The very fine ring spacing across this piece results from many brief depositional pulses, each contributing only a thin layer before the fluid was locally exhausted and the cycle paused; a system delivering the same total volume in fewer, longer episodes would have produced a handful of wide bands instead. The dense black outer band marks the earliest and most mineral-laden phase of that sequence. Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony within the quartz family, formed through successive layers of silica deposited within a cavity over time. It is common industry practice for coloured agate to be dyed or otherwise colour-enhanced to achieve vivid, saturated tones. Agate is one of the most widely distributed minerals on Earth, named after the Achates River in Sicily and worked continuously since antiquity.
