Geological Information
Banded Agate is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7 in the trigonal system, deposited in cyclic silica layers within a cavity in host rock. Where the original void was irregular rather than rounded, as here, the accumulating layers cannot form closed concentric rings and instead follow the uneven wall in open sweeps, filling faster on some sides than others and leaving the residual cavity off-centre. This is a normal outcome of vesicle geometry rather than an interruption to the process. The gold and olive rind is residual host basalt and iron staining at the outer surface. Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony within the quartz family, formed through successive layers of silica deposited within a cavity over time. It is common industry practice for coloured agate to be dyed or otherwise colour-enhanced to achieve vivid, saturated tones. Agate has one of the strongest historical records of any stone, named after the Achates River in Sicily. It is recovered from Brazil, India, the USA, Mexico and Germany; this piece is Brazilian.
