Blue Agate Slab - 6.4 x 7.4 inch

This Blue Agate Slab presents a face of soft, cloud-like banding in slate and pale blue, the layers folding and doubling back on themselves rather than running in clean parallel arcs, rising to a rounded dome at the top. Toward the centre the bands close on a lighter, almost translucent core where the silica ran finest. The front face is cut and polished to a high, even shine that deepens the blue considerably against the chalky white of the outer edge; the back and sides retain the stone's natural, unpolished exterior. The base is cut flat, and the piece stands on its own without support.

Geological Information
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony within the quartz family, formed through successive layers of silica deposited within a cavity over time. It is common industry practice for coloured agate to be dyed or otherwise colour-enhanced to achieve vivid, saturated tones. This piece is Mohs 7 in the trigonal system, with the folded, non-parallel banding across the face reflecting an irregular cavity wall that the successive silica layers had to follow rather than a smooth void. Agate takes its name from the Achates River in Sicily, recorded by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, and has been worked continuously since ancient Mesopotamia for seals, amulets, and inlay. Commercial sources include Brazil, India, the USA, Mexico, and historically Germany; this piece is from Brazil.
