Geological Information
Blue Goldstone is a man-made glass rather than a naturally occurring mineral, silica glass at Mohs 5.5 to 6 in which cobalt oxide produces the deep blue colour and suspended copper crystal platelets produce the metallic sparkle. That sparkle effect, called aventurescence, is the same optical phenomenon seen in natural aventurine, but here it is engineered rather than geological. The process dates to seventeenth century Venetian glassmaking, where tradition holds it was discovered accidentally by the Miotti family of glassmakers, though that origin story may be apocryphal. Production began in Murano and has since moved primarily to China. This piece is man-made and is disclosed as such.
