Geological Information
Blue Tiger Eye is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal structure, formed as a pseudomorph in which silica replaced parallel crocidolite fibres while preserving their alignment; the fibre structure produces the chatoyant band of light. In this blue form, called Hawk's Eye, the oxidation of the original fibres is incomplete, leaving the blue-grey colour. The replacement is complete, so the stone is fully silica and safe to handle. Primary sources are South Africa, with additional material from India, Australia, the USA, and Brazil.
