Geological Information
Blue Tiger Eye, also called Hawk's Eye, is a form of the Quartz family (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7, trigonal system) made up of parallel fibres of crocidolite that have been replaced by silica, a process that creates the chatoyancy, or moving cat's-eye effect. Its blue-grey colour comes from that crocidolite. The fibre-replacement process is complete, so the stone is fully silica and safe to handle. It was worn in ancient Rome as a protective talisman, including by soldiers going into battle, and has been used in traditional practice across parts of Asia and Africa. Principal sources include South Africa, along with India, Australia, the USA and Brazil.
