Bumble Bee Jasper is not a jasper. Jasper is a silicon dioxide material, whereas this is a sedimentary rock of calcium carbonate carrying sulphur and arsenic minerals, with a Mohs hardness of 5. It forms near volcanic fumaroles in Indonesia, and the colours map directly onto specific minerals: sulphur produces the yellow, realgar the orange, and manganese oxide the black. The material is natural and requires no treatment. There is no historical tradition attached to it, as it is a late twentieth-century commercial discovery. Indonesia is the source, from deposits near volcanic vents.
