Geological Information
Bumblebee Jasper is, despite its trade name, not a true jasper but a sedimentary rock of calcium carbonate at roughly Mohs 5. It forms near volcanic fumaroles in Indonesia, where sulphur produces the yellow, realgar the orange, and manganese oxide the black bands that give it its striking colouring. Because it forms in this volcanic setting, it contains natural arsenic minerals, realgar and orpiment; polished pieces are safe for display and normal handling, but the arsenic content is disclosed and the material should not be used to make water elixirs. Origins: Indonesia, near volcanic vents.
