Orchid Calcite is calcium carbonate with manganese trace content, a calcite-family carbonate with a Mohs hardness of 3 and a trigonal crystal system, its soft pink to lavender-pink colour produced by the manganese. It is closely related to Mangano Calcite and Pink Calcite in composition, but the orchid designation refers to material with a slightly more lilac-toned pink. Peru is the primary commercial source for this colour range, with additional material from Mexico, and it shares the broader tradition of South American calcite working. Its principal sources are Peru and Mexico.
