Geological Information
Carnelian is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide mineral of the trigonal system at Mohs 7. The orange to red-orange colour comes from iron oxide impurities and ranges naturally from pale peach through to deep blood orange. Heat treatment is common and standard practice in the trade: untreated carnelian tends toward a brownish orange, and controlled heating produces the vivid red-orange the stone is commercially known for. Some material sold as carnelian is dyed agate rather than carnelian at all, and the two can be told apart by holding a piece to the light, since genuine carnelian shows a cloudy, diffuse colour distribution while dyed agate shows colour concentrated along banding. It is one of the oldest continuously used gemstones in human history, used in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome for seals, amulets, and jewellery, and found in Tutankhamun's tomb; it was chosen for seal work specifically because wax does not stick to it, and it appears among the twelve stones of the High Priest's breastplate in Hebrew tradition.
