Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide, crystallising in the monoclinic system at a soft Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, producing some of the most vivid greens in the mineral world, with its colour coming entirely from copper. Its characteristic light-and-dark green banding forms by rhythmic precipitation of copper carbonate during growth. It was ground and used as a green eye pigment in ancient Egypt, and the Russian Imperial Malachite Room in the Winter Palace in St Petersburg is one of the most spectacular examples of decorative mineral use in history.
