Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, a calcium sulphate mineral that forms in sedimentary environments where mineral-rich waters evaporate, leaving fibrous layers that solidify into translucent masses. Its name derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, a nod to its soft white luminosity, and thin Selenite slabs served as window material in ancient Mesopotamia and Rome before glass was widely available. Mexico's Cave of the Crystals at Naica holds Selenite crystals exceeding 10 metres in length, among the largest mineral crystals ever recorded. This material is natural and untreated apart from the applied gold-toned surface motifs. Morocco is the primary commercial source, with further deposits in Mexico, the USA, Poland, and Australia.
