Geological Information
Lapis Lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral, composed primarily of lazurite, calcite, and Pyrite at Mohs 5-6; the deep blue comes from lazurite, the white veining from calcite, and the gold flecks from Pyrite. The Sar-e-Sang deposit in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province has been mined for over 6,000 years, one of the longest continuously worked mining sites in human history, and ground Lapis produced the ultramarine pigment used by Vermeer, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Afghanistan remains the most significant source, with material also from Chile and Russia.
