Geological Information
Chocolate Calcite is a trade name for a banded brown calcite, a calcium carbonate with a soft Mohs hardness of 3 and a trigonal system; its alternating brown and cream bands come from iron oxide layering in the calcium carbonate matrix, by a mechanism similar to banded agate but in a calcite rather than silica base. It is the same material sold as Brown Zebra Calcite, and its geological and associative data are drawn from that entry. It is a natural material, but soft and acid sensitive. Origins: Mexico is the primary commercial source.
