Geological Information
Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate, an amorphous mineral with a low Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 3.5. Its blue to blue-green colour comes entirely from copper. It is one of the most vibrantly coloured copper minerals and is often confused with turquoise, from which it is distinguished by its lower hardness. A rarer, harder and more translucent variety known as Gem Silica forms where chrysocolla occurs within quartz. It was used in ancient Egypt, where Cleopatra is reported to have worn it regularly, and was known in ancient Israel as Eilat Stone when found combined with malachite and turquoise. Chrysocolla is frequently found intergrown with malachite, azurite, turquoise and quartz, and these combination stones are commercially popular. This material is commonly sourced from Peru and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with further deposits in Arizona in the USA, Chile, Mexico and Israel.
