Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate, an amorphous phyllosilicate-class material with a soft Mohs hardness of about 2.5 to 3.5, and its blue to blue-green colour comes entirely from copper. It is frequently intergrown with quartz, malachite, azurite and turquoise, and the quartz-bearing combinations are popular because the harder quartz lends durability to an otherwise soft mineral. Chrysocolla is often confused with turquoise but can be told apart by its lower hardness, and the rare quartz-rich variety known as Gem Silica is harder and more translucent. It has a long ornamental history, said to have been worn in ancient Egypt and known in ancient Israel as Eilat Stone when found combined with malachite and turquoise. This is natural, untreated material, sourced primarily from Peru, with further material from the USA (Arizona), Chile and Mexico.
