Cinnabrite is a trade name for cinnabar, mercury sulphide, occurring within a matrix of quartz, limestone, or other host rock, with the cinnabar itself at a Mohs hardness of 2 to 2.5 and a trigonal crystal system. Cinnabar is the primary ore of mercury and is a genuinely toxic mineral, and its vivid red is one of the most striking colours in the mineral world, which made it historically significant as the pigment vermilion and as a decorative and ceremonial stone despite its toxicity. It has been used in Chinese culture for over 2000 years in lacquerware and ceremonial objects, where the colour was associated with luck, prosperity, and protection. Principal commercial material comes from China, particularly Hunan province, with additional sources in Spain and the United States.
