Banded Agate, the foundational agate form, is microcrystalline quartz deposited in alternating silica layers of varying mineral content, creating the characteristic parallel banding; the bands form as silica-rich hydrothermal fluids fill cavities in host rock, each layer recording a separate deposition event. Agate is among the oldest documented gemstones in human use, named by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus after the Achates River in Sicily, and used extensively in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome for seals, amulets and inlay.
