Geological Information
Ruby Zoisite, also called Anyolite from the Maasai word for green, is a naturally occurring combination rock: opaque ruby corundum set in green zoisite with black tschermakite hornblende. The vivid green comes from the zoisite, the red from the ruby, and the black flecks from the hornblende, and its hardness varies across the piece from about 6 in the zoisite to 9 in the ruby. It was first commercially recognised in the Longido district of Tanzania in 1954, which remains the primary source, with additional material from Kenya.
