Plume Agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz with a hardness of 7 and a trigonal structure. Its defining feature is the branching, feather-like inclusions that spread through the translucent silica; these plumes are mineral formations, typically iron or manganese oxides that grew through the stone during its formation, and although they are often mistaken for fossilised plants they are not organic material. Agates of this kind form when silica-rich fluids fill cavities and fractures in a host rock and crystallise slowly, with the included minerals branching outward as growth proceeds. Inclusion agates have been valued since antiquity and were carried in Greek and Roman traditions as agricultural and protective talismans.
