The White Jade Heart is a pale cream to soft white stone with a faintly green cast, semi-translucent enough that light passes into the body and glows back at the thinner edges. The surface has the slightly greasy, soapy lustre characteristic of nephrite rather than a hard glassy shine. The Heart is a comfortable hand size, dense and cool to the touch. Tone varies slightly between pieces, some running whiter and others closer to cream.

Geological Information
White Jade is nephrite, a calcium magnesium silicate of the amphibole group, monoclinic in system at a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. The pale white to cream colouration comes from minimal iron content in the nephrite structure; higher iron produces the green varieties. Nephrite's defining property is not hardness but toughness: an interlocking fibrous crystal structure makes it exceptionally resistant to fracture, which is why it could be worked into thin blades and fine carvings long before modern tools. The material is natural and requires no treatment. The most revered form is Hetian jade from the Kunlun Mountains of Xinjiang, valued in Chinese culture above all other jade including green, with the finest translucent white specimens called mutton-fat jade; it has been traded from Xinjiang into central China for over five thousand years and appears in the earliest Chinese written records as the most precious of materials.
