Geological Information
Rainforest Jasper is a trade name, and the material is geologically a Rhyolite rather than a true chalcedony-family Jasper: a fine-grained silica-rich igneous rock of quartz, feldspar and volcanic glass, Mohs 6 to 7. Its mineral content is close to that of granite, but the fine grain comes from rapid cooling at the surface rather than the slow subsurface cooling that produces granite's coarser texture. The highly variable colouring, running through grey, green, pink, red, brown and cream in bands and patches, reflects the diverse mineral inclusions and flow banding formed as the lava erupted and set. Rhyolite has been worked by indigenous peoples of the American Southwest and Australia for tools and ornament for thousands of years, with the Oregon Obsidian Cliffs area a documented historical source. Several trade names, including Rainforest Rhyolite and Australian Rhyolite, refer to the same material. Primary commercial sources are Oregon and Wyoming in the USA, along with Australia, Mexico, Germany and Iceland.
