Geological Information
Iolite is the gem variety of cordierite, a magnesium aluminium silicate at Mohs 7 to 7.5, and one of the most strongly pleochroic minerals known, showing blue-violet, grey and nearly colourless tones along its different crystal axes. Here it is carved with silvery mica running through the material, which adds the metallic sheen. The name comes from the Greek ios, meaning violet, and iolite's polarising property let Viking navigators use it as a solar compass on overcast days. The material is sourced from India, with further deposits in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Brazil, Norway and Greenland.
