Dolomite is a carbonate mineral, a calcium magnesium carbonate crystallizing in the trigonal system with a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, occurring in white, pink, grey, and yellow tones from trace impurities. It is both a mineral and a rock, forming the entire Dolomite mountain range in Italy, and is named after the French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu, who first described it in 1791. It forms distinctive rhombohedral crystals with curved, saddle-shaped faces, a feature considered a key identifier of the mineral. It is found in the Aragon region of Italy, with further sources in Spain, Switzerland, the USA, Mexico, and Brazil.
