Geological Information
Crinoid Fossil preserves the stem segments of crinoids, marine echinoderms related to starfish and sea urchins, historically called "sea lilies" despite being animals rather than plants. Their stems were built from stacked calcite plates known as ossicles, and it is the circular or star-shaped cross-sections of these stacked segments that form the identifying pattern seen in the finished stone, at a soft Mohs 3 to 4. Crinoids have existed since the Ordovician Period, roughly 485 million years ago, and were so abundant in some ancient seas that entire limestone beds formed largely from their remains. Colour ranges from cream and tan to grey depending on the surrounding matrix, with some specimens showing brassy metallic tones where pyritization has occurred. As a calcite-based fossil, it is soft and sensitive to acids, closer in durability to limestone than to quartz. This material is most commonly sourced from Morocco.
