Maligano Jasper is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, a microcrystalline silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal structure. Its warm brown, red, cream, and black tones and fluid swirling bands come from varied mineral deposition, making it immediately recognisable among Indonesian jaspers. It comes exclusively from the Maligano region of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where silica-rich hydrothermal fluids deposited the quartz in these complex patterns, and it is a relatively recent commercial discovery on the international market, with every piece geologically unique.
